Abstract

Where we live is fundamentally important to our health and happiness but often the systems, structures and services that shape our places are hidden, disconnected and haphazardly constructed.

This talk will explore what place-based systems change means and how it connects to human centred design and UX. I’ll introduce the broader concepts, share some examples of how these ideas play out in practice and then focus in on Brighton.

About

Jenni Lloyd | Place-based systems change

Jenni started her career designing and producing digital products and services in the early 1990s and worked her way through an alphabetti spaghetti of job titles – HCI, IA, UX, UCD, HCD. This experience laid the foundations for what she now thinks of as participatory practice, which she applies daily in her work helping public and third sector organisations and communities solve social problems through place-based collaboration.

Over the last 10 years the primary focus of Jenni’s work has been on understanding and creating the conditions for people and places to flourish, initially as an independent consultant, then as a member of Nesta’s Government Innovation team and now in her current role at Collaborate CIC. She believes in the power of connection – and the possibility of significant change through creating the spaces and opportunities for people to build relationships and bridge their differences. She is particularly interested in local government as it holds the closest relationship between the citizen and the state, having the power to shape the way places operate and affect the lives of the people who live, work and play there.
